January is a notoriously tricky time for the foodservice industry with consumers recovering from Christmas spending and striving to stick to their New Year’s resolutions to be healthier. In order to generate sales, outlets must find ways to satisfy health conscious consumers in 2014.

According to Technomic research, 50% of consumers say they would like to see more healthy options on menus*. The number of wraps on UK menus is up 25% and 15% of consumers choose a wrap once a week or more oftenº, which can be attributed to the fact that they are considered a lighter alternative to bread. Wraps lend themselves perfectly to the rising grab and go trend, which prioritises selling points such as the freshness of food, speed of service, value for money, customisation and visual appeal.

Wraps inspire a range of different fillings and can be made up of all kinds of flavours from all over the world. Chicken, a protein source associated with healthier eating, currently resides at the top of the protein ingredient chart appearing in four out of 10 wraps*, therefore expect to see chicken-focused concepts flourish in 2014.

    Mission Wraps

Consumer desire to make healthier food choices is not limited to early months of the year. Vegetarian offerings account for one out of six wraps*, indicating that consumers are cutting out meat and the demand for healthy options is constant all year round. This is reflected in the current movement towards Mediterranean-style wraps with ingredients like red peppers, feta cheese and hummus. Mission tortillas come in many varieties suitable for creating the ultimate healthy menu with our reduced-fat, low-fat, multigrain and wholemeal tortilla options.
